The Kulin nation is an alliance of several indigenous Australian nations within Victoria. With permission from the Wurundjeri people, we used the Kulin name to reflect the alliance of several suri breeders in the West Gippsland region of Victoria, home of the Boonerwrung people.
Kulin suri breeders have a combined total of more than 30 years experience in the suri alpaca industry.
Our goal is to produce suri alpaca of exceptional quality and we are committed to enhancing bloodlines by using only quality animals to further the genetics of white and coloured suri in Australia. We are breeding fine, lustrous fleece on contented, healthy, well-conformed animals which not only do consistently well in the show ring, but are now producing quality progeny.
We are all passionate in regard to breeding suri. Of the two types of alpaca (huacaya and suri), the suri is the rarer breed, comprising only 5% of the world’s alpacas.
Suri alpacas are distinguished in the camelid family by their unique fleece characteristics. The fleece hangs down from the body in pencils or locks, often described as looking like dreadlocks. This exquisite fibre is valued for its lustre and soft, silky handle. The fleece is used primarily for producing high quality garments and is highly sought after by international fashion houses.
The openness of the suri fleece along the backline makes the animals ideally suited to the hot conditions of Australia’s summer. They also manage very well during colder weather, especially if some shelter from the wind is provided.
Alpaca have soft, padded feet and are the perfect choice for those looking for farm animals that are gentle on the earth and for those who are committed to sustainable agriculture and maintaining soil, pasture and water supply for future generations.
The suri industry is still young enough for new breeders to be successful both in the show ring and in the market place.
